All you need to know about Rainbowfish
Rainbowfish are one of the most exciting freshwater fish to keep in the aquarium. They have vivid colours and high activity levels, which makes them extremely popular with aquarists. This in-depth guide will walk you through everything to know about keeping Rainbowfish.
What are Rainbowfish?
The rainbowfish family belongs to Melanotaeniidae and are native to Australia, New Guinea, and parts of Southeast Asia. They get their name from their iridescent colours that shift dramatically with light conditions and mood of the fish. These schooling fish are very docile and can thrive in a well-balanced community tank.
Natural Habitat
In the wild, Rainbowfish is widely found in both clear and slightly brackish freshwaters, like some rivers, lakes, and swamps. Areas that tend to have thick plant covers which provide significant cover and plenty of food sources are mostly populated by them. An aquarium providing such conditions is essential for the well-being of a rainbowfish.
Most Common Rainbowfish Species
Boesemani Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani): Very popular among hobbyists, they have gradient colours, transitioning from deep blue to bright orange.
Neon Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox): They are small and beautiful fish, with shimmering silver bodies and neon blue highlights.
Red Rainbowfish (Glossolepis incisus): They are known for their brilliant red colouration, especially in males.
Threadfin Rainbowfish (Iriatherina werneri): Recognizable by their elongated fins and delicate appearance.
Setting up Tank for Rainbowfish
Proper development of your Rainbowfish requires a well-constructed tank environment.
Tank Size: 30 gallons are a must for smaller species, while the bigger species such as Boesemani Rainbowfish require at least 50 gallons.
Water Parameters: The pH should be 6.5 - 8.0. Temperature can vary from 74 - 78 F (23 - 26 C).
Filtration and Aeration: Properly filter and aerate the water
Substrate and Decorations: Use fine gravel or sand as substrate. Add a large number of plants, driftwood, and rock piles as decorations to ensure enough hiding spots to replicate their natural home.
Lighting: Moderate to bright lighting will enhance their colours and support plant growth.
Diet and Feeding
Rainbowfish are omnivorous. They enjoy a variety of food. High-quality flake food, pellets, and some live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms should be provided. Adding vegetables like blanched spinach or zucchini to the diet can be good for them too.
Behaviour and Tankmates
Rainbowfish are peaceful. They enjoy the company of at least six of their own kind. They are active swimmers and prefer the middle to upper levels of the tank. Suitable tankmates include:
Tetras
Corydoras catfish
Gouramis
Barbs (non-aggressive species)
Other Rainbowfish
Avoid sharing their tank with aggressive or overly large species. It may intimidate or harm them.
Breeding Rainbowfish
Breeding Rainbowfish can be a rewarding experience. Here are some tips to encourage spawning:
Setup of Breeding Tank: Use a separate tank and add fine-leaved plants or spawning mops to it.
Preparation of Breeding Pair: Feed them high-protein foods such as live or frozen brine shrimp.
Spawning behaviour: The males will flash their brightest colours to attract the females. Remove the adults from the tank immediately after the eggs are laid, so they won't eat them.
Egg Care: The eggs will hatch after 7-10 days under well-aerated and stable water conditions.
Common Health Problems
Rainbowfish are relatively hardy, but they can be prone to:
Ich: White spots on the body and fins, treated with temperature adjustments and medication.
Fin Rot: Frayed fins due to poor water quality or aggression.
Internal Parasites: Symptoms include weight loss and reduced activity.
Most health problems can be prevented with regular water changes, a balanced diet, and monitoring tank conditions.
