All you need to know about Rasboras

Rasboras are one of the most sought-after aquarium fish because of their bright colours, gentle nature, and low maintenance. Rasboras are small, freshwater fish of the Cyprinidae family found in Southeast Asia, typically inhabiting slow river streams. Rasboras make great community tank additions and are suitable for both first-time aquarists and seasoned aquarists alike.

Various Types of Rasboras

There are several species of Rasboras in the aquarium trade, with each species having its special features. Among the most well-known are:

Harlequin Rasboras (Trigonostigma heteromorpha) – Characterized by their black triangular spot and iridescent orange body.

Chilli Rasboras (Boraras brigittae) – Small, fire engine red-fish that adds a splash of colour into nano tanks.

Lambchop Rasboras (Trigonostigma espei) – Looks similar to Harlequin Rasboras but with a narrower body and stronger black marking.

Scissortail Rasboras (Rasbora trilineata) – Identified by their long, forked tails that look like scissors.

Glowlight Rasboras (Trigonostigma hengeli) – They are smaller fish with an orange stripe along their body that looks like a glow.

Ideal Tank Conditions for Rasboras

Rasboras prefer aquariums that have well-maintained and consistent water conditions. Some of the following are essential considerations:

Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended, though larger tanks allow for more natural behaviour.

Water Parameters: Keeping the temperature between 22-28°C, a pH value between 6.0-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water.

Filtration & Aeration: The aquarium will need a very gentle filter as Rasboras do not tolerate strong currents or aeration.

Diet and Feeding Behaviour

Rasboras are omnivores and appreciate variety in their diet. To ensure that they stay healthy, give them a combination of:

1) Good-quality flake food

2) Micro pellets

Behaviour and Tank Companions

Rasboras are schooling fish and must be maintained in groups of six or more to avoid stress and promote natural behaviour. Rasboras are peaceful fish and fare well with tankmates that include:

Tetras

Guppies

Corydoras catfish

Dwarf Gouramis

Shrimp and snails

Avoid keeping Rasboras with fin-nipping or much larger fish that may view them as food.

Breeding Rasboras

Breeding Rasboras is quite easy in the proper conditions. Use a dedicated breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water and fine-leaved plants. Females lay adhesive eggs on plant leaves, and the parents should be removed after spawning to prevent them from eating the eggs. The fry can develop in approximately 24-48 hours and can be fed infusoria or powdered fry food until large enough to eat baby brine shrimp.

Common Health Problems

Rasboras are generally robust but can be susceptible to typical fish diseases including:

Ich (White Spot Disease): White spots on the body, treatable using aquarium salt or medication.

Fin Rot: Resulting from poor water quality, treatable with antibiotics.

Fungal Infections: Look like white, cotton-like patches and can be treated using antifungal drugs.

Velvet Disease: A parasitic disease that results in a gold or rust-coloured dust on the fish, which can be treated with copper-based drugs.

Swim Bladder Disease: Impacts the buoyancy of the fish, usually due to overfeeding or diet, feeding peas or fasting the fish can help.

Bacterial Infections: This may result in red streaks, ulcers, or bloating, treating with antibacterial medication and better water quality can help.

To avoid diseases, keep the tank clean, do frequent water changes, and don't overfeed.
