All you need to know about Koi fighters

Koi fighters are interesting additions to any freshwater aquarium praised for their intense colours and fierce temperaments. Frequently confused with koi carp or Betta fish, koi fighters are a variety of Betta splendens, specially bred for koi-like coloured patterns. Throughout this blog, we will provide you with all the information on koi fighters, from what they need in terms of care to behaviour, feeding, and more.

What are Koi Fighters?

Koi fighters are recognised by their marbled appearance similar to ornamental koi carp. Although they are called koi fighters, koi fighters are not koi but a selectively bred group of Betta splendens. Koi fighters are sought after by aquarists due to their rich combination of orange, red, white, black, and sometimes blue colours.

It is not only their appearance that sets koi fighters apart, but also their personalities. Each one of them tends to have a temperament of their own, which can vary from interactive and inquisitive to shy and possessive.

Housing Koi Fighters

When housing koi fighters, their solitary nature should be considered. Similar to other varieties of Betta, male koi fighters are territorial and should not be kept in the company of other males. Females can be kept in sororities under certain circumstances, but even then, caution should be exercised when monitoring aggression.

Tank size: At least 10–15 litres for one koi fighter is ideal, but larger tanks are always preferable.

Filtration: Gentle filtration is best, as koi fighters do not like strong currents.

Heating: Keep water temperatures between 24–27°C.

Decor: Create hiding places using plants, caves, and soft substrate to minimise stress in koi fighters.

Behaviour and Compatibility

Male and non-neutered female koi fighters, in particular, may fight with other male betta fish. But some peaceful tank companions, when selected with caution, may be kept together with them, including:

Corydoras catfish

Snails

Tiny non-fin-nipping fish like ember tetras (with caution)
Always keep a close eye on the tank when acquiring new tankmates for koi fighters.

Feeding Koi Fighters

Feeding koi fighters a varied and protein-rich diet is vital to keep them healthy and coloured. They are carnivorous and love:

High-quality betta pellets

Feed koi fighters once or twice a day using small amounts, and take out any leftover food to avoid water quality problems.

Breeding Koi Fighters

Raising koi fighters can be a fulfilling experience, but they need preparation and patience. Males construct bubble nests on the surface of the water and are very aggressive when breeding. If you are going to breed koi fighters:

Supply a separate breeding tank

Put in the female only after the male has constructed a nest

Take out the female once she has spawned so that the male will not attack her

Health and Maintenance

Fighting koi are usually durable fish but become susceptible to all the usual stuff such as fin rot, ich, and bloating if they are in crappy water. How to keep healthy koi fighters:

Regularly change water (25–30% weekly)

Regularly check water parameters

Don't overfeed

Check for signs of illness or stress such as weak colours, clamped fins, or lethargy.
